Spring teaches us that waiting for something means to make a home for it inside of you; that arrival means becoming a habitable place for a new season. This proximity to the rare earth reminds us that we are not alone in the wilderness, but that we are home.
In an embodied process of meditation and materialization, creative cycles uproot what is known. Kindling is the name for small bits of organic material used for burning to start a bigger fire; it is also the term for the rabbit's birthing process. Nature knows that beginning and ending are intertwined, that in order for a seed to appear, the plant must have lived its full life.
The Vernal exhibition reflects this state of becoming — one that holds both the quiet of gestation and the tension of emergence. Like the many species that require vernalization before flowering, the work gathers energy beneath the surface before bursting open, revealing the beauty and discomfort inherent in growth.
Spanning a range of materials, scale, mythologies, and form, Vernal brings together current and former Buffalo Prescott residents alongside artists from Detroit and beyond to investigate the ways the seed of life is reaching toward the possibilities of the unknown.
Across the exhibition, a sense of transformation unfolds — like the Earth knows itself as boundless, the work is charged with an underlying energy: the kindling of a collective awakening.
